The Revenant is an unsupported individual Ultra Adventure Run scheduled for 16 to 19 January 2025, taking place at Welcome Rock, situated on the border of Southland and Central Otago. This event features a challenging course comprising four laps, with participants facing a total vertical ascent exceeding 16,000 meters across diverse terrains, including alpine tussock land and beech forests reminiscent of Fiordland.
Runners encounter a range of environmental conditions, from heat to cold and wet weather, with the potential for snow, contributing to the event’s rigorous nature. The race has a total allowable time of 60 hours, with specific checkpoints requiring navigation by map and compass, as GPS devices and watches are prohibited. Notably, there is a 30-hour cut-off at the end of the second lap and a 45-hour cut-off at the end of the third lap. The unmarked course offers route choices between checkpoints, which may affect the overall distance and vertical climb. This event is known for its demanding physical and mental challenges, making it a significant undertaking in the ultra-running community.
